Call it a drug.
Theres no doubt that Facebook has became one of the most popular social networking sites on this planet. It went from being a website for college students, to one of the biggest advertising sites in the world. Along with advertising on this site comes cummunicating. Facebook has many different ways you can communicate to other people. Sending messages, instant messages, commenting pictures and posting on walls are only a few ways you can communicate with others on Facebook. Although the idea of having a website that lets you communicate with whoever you want when it's convenient for you is very intriguing, doesn't there have to be some drawbacks? More than 25% of students at school will be on Facebook in class rather than listening to a lecture. Facebook is like a mini drug, once you start doing it you can't stop. It has gotten so popular that the Android market and the Itunes market have came out with Facebook Applications for your phone to use wherever you go. Call me crazy, but is this becoming a widespread epidemic?

Yes I have to agree with you that people and Facebook has become a bit of a epidemic. People are becoming obsessed with it so they aren't working or paying attention in school. What I'd like to know is what are you going to do about everyone using Facebook? What kind of argument can you make. Are they going to ban it from schools because kids aren't paying attention? What can they really do to get Facebook out of the classroom.
ReplyDeleteDavid I agree completely that facebook is addicting. Like many others in this classroom i actually have facebook on a tab because i know the second i get done commenting this im gonna go back on facebook for a second or two. I think its because we want to know if ppl are commenting us, or checking us out and we cant help but what wonder what all is going on with our friends.
ReplyDeleteBig Brother says you ought not to admit to your Fb dependency--people are watching.
ReplyDeleteJK LOL :)
ReplyDeleteI would defenetly agree that what your saying is true. I personally know people that would stay on facebook all day if given the oppertunity. I personally don't understand why it is so addicting. I have a facebook but I guess I am different because I find it boring.
ReplyDeleteHi my name is Kara Garrone and I am a senior at the University of Rhode Island. I really liked how you compared Facebook to a drug. I thought that was a very clever concept. I remember when I first made my facebook account. I was entering my freshman year of college. Since I was going away to school I thought it was the best way to keep in touch with my friends from home. However, now facebook is a mass media outlet for communication. Many of my friends have Facebook as their homepage: talk about addicting. Facebook allows for pictures to be displayed, status updates, birthday reminders, games, music, events, ads, and many more unlimited possibilities. It is one of the most influential tools for advertising and marketing. Almost every business has a facebook page. Many are even taking the step further and creating job positions in charge of their social media outlets. Social media is being engraved into our generations makeup. It is something that we have first hand access too and truly gives us a competitive edge in the work place. Like facebook, now twitter is becoming one of my favorite pass times. I like to follow celebrities and inspirational people. Even news outlets have shine through on twitter. I obtained most of my information on the recent disaster in Japan through twitter. Technology truly amaze me. I can not wait to see what advancements and what technological trends will be made next.
ReplyDeleteI remember when it was Myspace that was so addicting. What's next? First Myspace was the big social network, once people stopped using that and went to Facebook that was a huge deal. Soon a different, bigger, and better social network will come out and everyone will be bored of Facebook.
ReplyDeleteBeing a Public Relations major at the University of Rhode Island I've come to realization and I can strongly agree with you that Facebook is an extremely overused tool for advertising within companies. It's very interesting how much companies rely on the usage of Facebook and Twitter to brand themselves through their customers, however it's extremely smart in my eyes due to the constant need for everyone to be on it, so why not expose your company to a site that everyone is obsessing over. Though in everyone's mind, the Facbook addiction is insane, however if this is the turn that our society is taking through social media, then why not just go with it. Within my experience through internship interviews I have come to find that most companies are expecting you to have some knowledge of social media. Most companies are looking for young adults to be apart of their social media staff, and it's sick how someone can be hired to a company only to organize post comments to their Facebook and Twitter accounts. In relation to Facebook being a communication outlet, I completely agree I feel that in order to represent a company through social media, you have to know how to communicate to your viewers and you have to be able to update more than a couple of times a week. In one of my PR classes I learned that if your company has a twitter or Facebook account that isn't being updated on a regular basis than you should just delete it, because it's not creating a good name for you, it in fact is hindering your company due to the lack of relation to customers and the lack of value your customers will have of you. Though everyone may have an extremely negative view on all of this social media, I think that everyone should just go with it because it's only going to get greater and bigger from here on out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying I myself might be classified as a Facebook addict. Maybe you can point out the flaws in Facebook such as cyberbullying. Facebook has contributed to a lot of cyberbullying and has caused major issues for mainly teens everywhere. You could tie this into your paper. Not only point out the addiction people have but the affect it has on their personal life also.
